Burkard Schliessmann

A pianist shaped by the great traditions of European pianism, Schliessmann studied with eminent masters including Shura Cherkassky and Bruno Leonardo Gelber. His playing is widely praised for its intellectual depth, tonal refinement, and poetic lyricism — particularly in the works of Chopin and the German Romantics.

The American journal High Performance Review praised his artistry as: “The most imaginative playing one has heard yet on the level of Richter, Michelangeli, Serkin, Wild — the highest order of artistry.”

Schliessmann has performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, and beyond, appearing at leading festivals such as the Munich Piano Summer Festival, Frankfurt Feste, the Valldemossa Chopin Festival, and the Maurice Ravel Festival in Paris. As orchestral soloist, he has collaborated with major ensembles including the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, the WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and others.

His interpretations have drawn exceptional international acclaim. James Harrington of American Record Guide wrote: “I rank this Chopin among the best available. With both the technique and intellect to do just about anything he wants, Schliessmann's strength is in the lyrical, legato melodies that make Chopin's music such a cornerstone of the piano repertoire.”

Donald Vroon, chief editor of American Record Guide, added: “Schliessmann is the best pianist I know at entering the world and expressing the awareness of the German romantics.”

A celebrated recording artist and Official Artist of Steinway & Sons, Schliessmann has been featured on major European and American cultural broadcasts, including ARTE, 3sat, UNITEL Classica, and Classic Arts Showcase; plus was Cover Artist in major international magazines, such as PIANIST, International Piano and most recently International Arts Manager. His work has also led to collaborations with distinguished film and television directors such as José Montes-Baquer and Enrique Sánchez Lansch.
