Jan De Winne (1962) studied flute and music theory at the conservatory and the university of Ghent. He then went on to study the traverso in Barthold Kuijken’s class at the Brussels conservatory. In 1987, he was awarded the first price in the Musica Antiqua Bruges competition. Between 1990 and 2005, Jan De Winne was a member of various period orchestras, including l’Orchestre des Champs Elysées, Collegium Vocale Gent, the Wiener Akademie and Il Fondamento. Although he regularly appears as a soloist with the L’Orchestre des Agrémens, Jan De Winne has primarily dedicated himself to chamber music projects the last few years, which include such partners as Lorenzo Ghielmi. Most of his time and musical energy, however, goes to the ensemble Il Gardellino he founded in 1988 with Marcel Ponseele.

Inspired by a passion for historical instruments, Jan has been copying 18th and 19th century flutes for the last 20 years, in addition to teaching at the Paris and Brussels conservatories. Jan De Winne has recorded for Eufoda, Naxos, Harmonia Mundi and Accent, and he is the artistic director of the label Passacaille.
