Karski Quartet

Founded in 2018 and based in Brussels, Belgium, the Karski Quartet is a group whose members have been brought together as much by shared musical inspiration as by friendship. Their spontaneity, energy, multitude of sources of inspiration including world and jazz music and pleasure they draw from playing together have been enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike.

The four founding members met during their studies at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. Three of them actually studied violin with the same teacher - Philippe Graffin, who became not only the first mentor of the quartet, but also an artistic collaborator, inviting the Karskis to share the artistic direction of his Traces Festival. The group have participated in several study programmes, masterclasses and residencies to perfect their craft (learning from members of renowned quartets such as Belcea, Ébène, Jerusalem, Artemis, Ysaÿe, Elias, Talich, Chilingirian, Casals...), all along maintaining a busy concert schedule. The season 2023/24 brings a Boccherini string quintets CD album release - recorded with cellist Raphaël Feye for Evil Penguin, and debut performances in Germany and Poland next to concerts in Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

Karski Quartet takes its name from Jan Karski, the legendary World War II resistance-movement figure. Committed as he was to showing others the dramatic truth about the war, the Karski Quartet members strongly believe that every era needs heroes like him. Amid the serious difficulties which the whole human population is facing now, they find Karski's profound compassion and uncompromising attitude an example to be emulated in art as well as in life.
